A Trinidad vehicle sale is not finished when money changes hands. The buyer and seller need to complete the Licensing Division transfer process with the required vehicle and identity documents. The Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act requires the transfer application within seven days of the change in possession.

The seven-day rule
Section 19 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act states that the transfer application is to be made within seven days after the change of possession.
Inspection may apply
Vehicle inspection requirements depend on age and transfer circumstances. For a 2021 private vehicle in 2026, confirm the current inspection requirement with the Licensing Division or an authorised testing station before the transfer appointment.
Keep the vehicle identifiers together
Registration number, chassis number, make, model, colour and engine details appear on the transfer paperwork. Check them against the vehicle before signing.
